This year is the 111th edition of the agriculture event, and it just keeps getting bigger and better each year.  As a newcomer to the fair, I can’t get over the size of this event.  The fair takes up over 500,000 square feet of indoor space!  You can get to almost everything while staying indoors – and that’s not such a bad thing in Manitoba!  Once you’re inside, there is lots of hustle and bustle with so much to take in. Today at the RMWF, it’s Military Day!  I had the opportunity to speak with the Public Affairs Officer for CFB Shilo; Lori Truscott and why this theme is important for CFB Shilo to be involved with the Royal. “We are such a big part of the community but it’s also a part that people don’t automatically connect to the agriculture community and the military, but Shilo has been in this area for over 100 years, and it’s a great opportunity for us to showcase a little bit of what it is we do.” Jaimie and Barry Penner, a military family, share what it means them that this day in incorporated into this event. “”It’s nice that people find it important to show appreciation for the military, it’s kind of a nice little ‘thank you’.” Members of the military will be attending in uniform today and we’d like to  thank them for their service. In addition to Monday being Military Day, we have “Feed the Farm” as the Royal Experience in the Westoba Place Main Arena starting at 4pm.  You’ll be able to get up close and personal with an assorted amount of farm animals to feed.  I’m excited to fawn over all the animals! Barrel Racing, Birds of Prey, Superdogs, and don’t forget about Doodles the clown and his fun filled family entertainment.

The smell of mini doughnuts has filled the air here at the Keystone Centre…and you know what that means, it’s Winter Fair week! Things have already kicked off this morning with the annual pancake breakfast, but the day isn’t over yet! The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair has been running since 1908, and one elderly couple has been attending the fair for as long as they can remember. “We’ve been coming here for a lot of years, and once we moved back to Brandon we started coming again because we just really missed it, especially the horse jumping” said Margaret Stewart. You can watch the horse jumping for yourself, it opens at 7:30 am tomorrow morning. If you can’t make it the Keystone centre until later today, don’t fret! RMWF is hosting HOJA at 4:30pm! A band that performs entirely with their voice and zero instruments. I’ve seen this band perform before, and I believe me, be prepared to get chills! Another crowd favorite, the SuperDogs, are set to make their first appearance tonight! A favorite childhood memory of mine and the reason I begged my parents for a pet; these doggo’s never dissapoint! Can’t catch them tonight? You can check back every night this week to watch these incredible dogs jump, race, and spin! The last event of the day starts off at 7pm tonight for the Wawanesa Insurance Gamblers Choice Show Jumping. Opening ceremonies for this show starts at 6:30pm with a special Salute to the Military.
